Stem Cell Therapy - Is It the Ultimate Solution?

Stem cell therapy is essentially the application of stem cells to effectively treat a medical condition or illness. Currently, the only known therapy with stem cells is stem-cell transplants, which take the form of a heart-gland transplant. However, the cells may also be obtained from umbilical stem cell blood, or from a patient's bone marrow.

The field of medical research and experimentation has grown exponentially in the past several years. Because of this, many scientific and clinical trials have sprung up across the country, testing promising treatments for everything from Alzheimer's disease to Parkinson's disease. However, many of these clinical trials have not had adequate proof of efficacy or safety to warrant clinical trials. In the case of stem cell therapy, such obstacles may be an issue. Still, other diseases have shown promise in the realm of stem cell therapies. These include cancers, Parkinson's, and other neurologic disorders.

Stem cells at typically found in the bone marrow, and they are produced by a process called somatic cell production. When a person is born, his or her parents generally provide them with enough stem cell cultures to last their lifetime. These cells then divide uncontrollably, forming most of the body's cells, including blood, bones, and teeth. Over time, new cell types are developed and released, and they become specialized, like hair, muscle, and organs. Stem cells are only made from human stem cells, which are actually genetically programmed cells that form organs, tissues, and hairs in the human body.

Because of the promise of regenerative therapytreating very sick patients, there have been a number of clinical trials involving this technology. Some of these clinical trials have proven successful in alleviating symptoms, and in some cases, curing the disease entirely. However, in order to obtain approval for stem cell products, clinical trials are required. This means that thousands of potential patients will have to undergo the procedure in order to determine whether it is an effective treatment. Unfortunately, finding clinical trials can be difficult, as they are typically sponsored by different pharmaceutical companies.

There are other options, however. Stem cell therapy can actually be performed in the doctor's office or in an outpatient procedure. An in-office procedure involves needle pricking the patient with the ability to inject the cells into a specific area, like the leg. An outpatient procedure uses the exact same method, but injectable solutions are not used. Either procedure allows the patient to receive treatment that uses cells harvested from their own body, without having to go through the strenuous experience of a clinical trial.

Stem cell therapy has the potential to offer a wide range of benefits to patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis. This treatment is not only available in the United States, but it is also offered in other countries. In Canada, a similar procedure called adult stem cell therapy (ASCT) is offered. Adult stem cell therapy is now being considered for use in patients with a variety of medical conditions.
